What art offers is space – a certain breathing room for the spirit. ~ J. Updike

You’ve heard it, for sure. That awful statement, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Or perhaps you’ve heard, “That can wait until I retire/get a new job/move to a better home…” The urge to shout, “Seriously?!” is sometimes overwhelming although to date has been held down! These could not be further from the truth or helpful!

Taking a break, getting out of the hustle and bustle, turning off the media and/or totally unplugging has invaluable benefits. You’re actually going to get to the end of your life much more quickly if you’re not sleeping consistently and well. Time after time I have heard people say, “I should have (fill in the blank) when I was younger/sooner/not waited for.” Although it is easy to believe we’ll get more done if we work harder or for a longer period of time the reality is that we’re beginning to run on fumes after a while and that will be harder to recover from.

Think of it a bit like a bank account. We can get down to $5 and while that surely isn’t enough to do too much with it is still something. It will require us to ‘earn’ an additional $5 to get up to $10. Get ourselves down to negative $5 and now we have to earn twice as much to get up to that same $10. We’ve gained nothing by going into the negative and it requires twice as much to get us replenished.

In Europe it is mandatory to take vacations. Long vacations as a matter of fact. In the EU there is a mandate for 4 weeks of paid time in addition to holidays. Shops actually close and go on holiday. In parts of Europe it can and often does look like there’s a big, “gone fishing” sign out front because it is so quiet and closed up! They’ve got the right idea!

I sincerely recognize how difficult this concept is and how tough it can seem to put into practice; we do not live in culture that values ‘out of the office’ auto-replies too well. And, if you work for yourself it is tough to hold onto the idea that not working will earn you more income in the longer run!

In planning for what you want in life I’d ask you to start to think about what you’d like to get out of your life. Do  you really want to get yourself into a mindset where working is the only thing you do? Even if you can’t take long, 4 week breaks, can you take a weekend away and better yet, away from cell service?

Not sure you can do that? I’m sure you can! Want some extra support? I’m right here just for that purpose. Give a shout out, get on my calendar and let’s see where you can go when you have all the energy you need!

Best for your week!
